Young Elsie is shocked to learn that her eccentric mother wanted her ashes to be scattered among her five ex-husbands. Elsie is adamant about carrying out her mother’s wishes, but the trip fundamentally alters her course.. The acting runs from very good to brilliant. The description of the story line was off putting for me but as we had festival tickets we were committed to seeing it. This is really the story of Elsie, a grown child of a flamboyant mother whose last wish, as she was dying of cancer, was that her daughter should seek out each of her five previous husbands and give them a fifth of her ashes to scatter. The personalities of her previous partners are all very different. Through her interactions with each of them, whom she hasn’t seen for years, Elsie comes to terms with her relationship with her mother and herself. It is such an emotional rendering / surrendering, Elsie’s flaws and difficulties are accepted and embraced. This is a heartfelt telling of a difficult story. It is sensitive, beautiful and ultimately uplifting. The film is in French and we saw it with subtitles. Absolutely superb!
